SOUNDTRACKS
Soundtracks are a lot more than movie music...

...or so I'm ready to argue as a 30 year devotee of this sorely under appreciated genre.  So, in an effort to do my part, each week
I'll be making recommendations of soundtracks current and vintage, make a fuss over long awaited soundtrack scores finally getting
a well deserved release, and in general, make some noise about this often overlooked category.  Beyond my long experience as a
listener and as a pianist and songwriter, both of which I've put to use in writing a quarterly soundtrack column for the
Chicago
Tribune, I can only offer my recommendations.  You'll discern my taste soon enough and upfront I'd like to make it clear that I'll
focus most heavily on SCORE soundtracks.  In the end, all criticism is subjective but if I can point a listener toward a little heard
soundtrack or strongly advise you to either ORDER IMMEDIATELY or SKIP ALTOGETHER, all the better.
Holiday films have had their share of sublime musical moments - many of
our most cherished Christmas carols, in fact, were written for the movies.  As
an avid soundtrack collector, over the years I've collected an assortment of
holiday movie soundtracks and have made a variety of my own compilations
for family and friends.  The tracks listed below constitute one of my most
requested with the majority of the selections coming from holiday movies.

Now some of these are from hard to find releases and are out of print but all
are worth tracking down (most are easy to find) and this is merely a
suggestion for you to put together your own holiday collection from the vast
assortment of Christmas movie soundtracks out there.  I'm listing the song
title, the source of the music and either the composer or performer.  Most of
my collections include selections from the classic TV specials (with lots of
Vince Guaraldi's timeless jazz score for A Charlie Brown Christmas, etc.) but
with one exception (The Snowman - I can't resist) - these are all from film
soundtracks.  Happy holidays from Knight at the Movies!
