SOUNDTRACKS
Soundtracks are a lot more than movie music...

...or so I'm ready to argue as a 30 year devotee of this sorely under appreciated genre.  So, in an effort to do my part, each
week I'll be making recommendations of soundtracks current and vintage, make a fuss over long awaited soundtrack scores
finally getting a well deserved release, and in general, make some noise about this often overlooked category.  Beyond my
long experience as a listener and as a pianist and songwriter, both of which I've put to use in writing a quarterly soundtrack
column for the
Chicago Tribune, I can only offer my recommendations.  You'll discern my taste soon enough and upfront I'd
like to make it clear that I'll focus most heavily on SCORE soundtracks.  In the end, all criticism is subjective but if I can
point a listener toward a little heard soundtrack or strongly advise you to either ORDER IMMEDIATELY or SKIP ALTOGETHER,
all the better.
Just time for a quickie recommendation this week.

It’s Gay Games week in Chicago and what could be better when your city's invaded
by thousands of GLBT folks from around the world than popping in
The
Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, one of the gayest soundtracks
ever committed to…um acetate?  Vinyl?  Whatever…

It’s all here – from the disco classics “Shake Your Groove Thang,” “I Will Survive”
and “I Love the Nightlife,” to a more recent dance floor track “Finally,” Abba’s
“Mamma Mia,” standards by Lena Horne and Patti Page, and that over the top
ballad, “I’ve Never Been to Me.”  That’s just for starters.

Though the disc doesn’t have the now required slew of remixes, it’s probably the
only thing missing from this lineup and hardcore circuit queens are probably the only
ones that will find something to complain about.  This truly is a disc for every music
loving gay.

Though I’m not a huge fan of song compilation soundtracks – and rarely
recommend them – this one is a huge exception to that rule.  Enjoy the games,
Chicagoland!  Everyone else, hop on a plane or your own Priscilla and hurry on
down!
